The Contact Person of WIMB project received the Dublin City University President's Award
Prof Dermot Brabazon, received the Dublin City University President's Award for engagement with business/industry on 23rd April 2015. The project is related to the development of 3D printing solutions for the die manufacture industry. In this project, novel 3D printed die designs are being developed which contain multiple polymeric materials at high dimensional accuracy. The goal of these new developments is to enable improved quality, reduced outsourcing, vertical integration of manufacturing, and increased profitability.

The member of the Management Board of WIMB project is awarded a prestigious ERC Consolidator Grant from the European Research Council
Prof. Jordi Sort, Sciences Faculty, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain, has been just awarded a Consolidator Grant from the European Research Council. His project entitled "Merging Nanoporous Materials with Energy-Efficient Spintronics (SPIN-PORICS)" aims to integrate engineered nanoporous materials into novel spintronic applications. The project takes advantage of the exciting possibility to control ferromagnetism of metals and semiconductors directly with electric field or DC voltage (i.e., without the need of electric current, which causes detrimental Joule heating effects). Such possibility has been so far reported only in ultra-thin films or nanoparticles, and the effects were rather small and typically occurring only below room temperature.
This Project tackles the development of a new type of nanocomposite material, comprising an electrically conducting or semiconducting nanoporous layer filled with a suitable dielectric material, where the magnetic properties of the metal/semiconductor will be largely tuned at room temperature by simply applying a voltage, via electric charge accumulation. Based on these new materials, innovative technological applications will be implemented: electrically-assisted magnetic recording, voltage-driven switching of magnetic random-access memories and spin field-effect transistors. The obtained results are likely to open new paradigms in the field of spintronics and will be of high economic transcendence.

The Coordinator of WIMB project is awarded a prestigious L'Oréal-UNESCO Award
Dr. Eva Pellicer, the Coordinator of WIMB project has been awarded in 9th Edition of the Spanish National Programme L'Oréal-UNESCO for 'Women in Science'. The award provides funding to support a research project dealing with the synthesis of nanoporous metallic alloys to serve as catalysts for the production of hydrogen.

The Senén Vilaró Prize for the best innovative company has been conferred on Endor Nanotechnologies
The Senén Vilaró Prize for the best innovative company has been conferred on Endor Nanotechnologies, a technology-based company that focuses its activity on metallic nanoparticles (mainly gold, silver and platinum). It modifies them at the surface level with organic molecules in order to obtain advanced nanosystems with specific functions. The particular characteristics of metallic nanoparticles have allowed the company to study different aspects. On the one hand, it uses programmes of medical application focused on oncology and commercialises them through the pharmaceutical industry; on the other hand, it uses programmes to develop dermatological applications, for instance common and innovative cosmetic products.
For the start-up companies (les than 8 years from the start) located at the University of Barcelona facilities (the Science Park is part of it as start ups and spin offs incubator), that received support and advice in their early stages and with the participation of former University of Barcelona students, the technology transfer office (Fundació Bosch i Gimpera - UB) and the Social Council of the University of Barcelona choose the best innovation company each year, and this year Endor Nanotechnologies were awarded.
